How Much Does Etsy Charge to Sell? Every Fee Explained (2026)

So, how much does Etsy charge to sell? Etsy lets you open a shop without a monthly subscription, but every listing and every sale comes with a fee.

For a typical US seller, the standard charges are a $0.20 listing fee, a 6.5% transaction fee, and payment processing of 3% plus $0.25.

Together, those usually take about 10% to 14% of an order, depending on how low the item price is.

Ads, currency conversion, and a few optional extras can push that number higher.

This guide walks through each charge, shows real payout math, and covers ways to keep more of what you earn.

I checked the rates below against Etsy's own policy and Help Center pages on September 29, 2026.

Etsy changes its fees from time to time, so confirm the numbers in your Shop Manager before you set prices.

The Etsy Shop Set-Up Fee

Some new shops pay a one-time, non-refundable set-up fee before they can open.

Etsy's announcement on new-shop onboarding introduced it at $15, and says it will tell you during set-up whether the fee applies to you.

The current policy is less specific than that announcement.

It says you may be required to pay a set-up fee, that the amount shows up during onboarding, and that Etsy can change it.

Third-party seller guides report amounts from $15 up to $29 (eRank Help, October 2025), so treat the exact number as something you confirm on screen rather than something you can predict.

Etsy places a pending charge on your card during onboarding and processes it once your shop is open and ready for orders.

How the Etsy Listing Fee Works

Each listing costs $0.20. A few details tend to surprise new sellers:

  • Listings last four months. Etsy renews them automatically for another $0.20 unless you switch a listing to manual renewal.

  • The fee applies whether or not the item sells.

  • With multiple quantities in one listing, Etsy charges $0.20 again each time a unit sells, since that sale renews the listing.

  • Editing a listing is free.

  • Private listings are the exception: you pay the $0.20 only when the private listing sells.

If you upload 50 products, that is $10 upfront before a single customer shows up. Think of it as the cost of putting your goods on the shelf.

The 6.5% Transaction Fee

Every sale through Etsy.com carries a 6.5% transaction fee. The base is bigger than many sellers expect.

Etsy charges it on the listing price plus the shipping and gift wrapping you charge the buyer. If you offer paid personalization, that extra charge counts too.

For US sellers, sales tax is left out of the calculation. Sellers outside the US pay the fee on the listing price including any taxes they build into it, plus shipping and gift wrap.

The practical takeaway: if you charge $8 for shipping and the label costs you $5, Etsy still takes 6.5% on the full $8.

Payment Processing Fees by Country

Etsy Payments handles card payments, Apple Pay, Google Pay, and other methods, and it charges a processing fee on each order.

The rate depends on where your bank account is located. Unlike the transaction fee, the processing fee is calculated on the total sale amount including shipping and any sales tax.

Here is a sample from the Etsy Help Center's payment processing table, which lists dozens more countries:

Bank account location

Processing fee

United States

3% + $0.25

Canada (domestic and US orders)

3% + 0.25 CAD

Australia (domestic orders)

3% + 0.25 AUD

United Kingdom

4% + £0.20

Germany, France, Spain, Italy

4% + €0.30

India

5% + ₹25

Japan

6.0% + $0.30

Two extra notes. First, if you refund a sale, Etsy credits the processing fee back in proportion to the refund.

Second, processing fees may carry VAT in some locations, and a few countries add a small deposit fee for low payouts.

Offsite Ads and Etsy Ads Fees

Etsy runs two advertising programs, and they work very differently.

Etsy Ads are optional. You set a daily maximum budget, and Etsy never charges more than that per day.

Offsite Ads are Etsy's ads on outside networks such as social platforms and search engines. You only pay when a shopper clicks an ad and orders from your shop within 30 days, and the fee is a percentage of the whole order, including shipping and gift wrap. The rate depends on your last 12 months of sales:

  • Under $10,000: 15% per attributed order, and you can opt out.

  • $10,000 or more: 12% per attributed order. Participation becomes required, and the lower 12% rate stays with the shop for life, even if sales later drop below the threshold.

Etsy caps the Offsite Ads fee at $100 on any single order. If a shopper's last click before buying was an Etsy Ads click, only the Etsy Ads fee applies.

Other Etsy Fees You Might Run Into

A handful of charges only affect certain sellers:

  • Etsy Plus: $10 per month. It includes 15 listing credits (shown as $3) and $5 in Etsy Ads credits each billing cycle. Credits expire if you do not use them.

  • Shipping labels: Cost depends on the carrier, package weight, size, and destination. Signature confirmation and insurance add to the price.

  • Currency conversion: List in a currency other than your payment account currency and Etsy charges 2.5% on the sale amount.

  • Instant transfer: Eligible US sellers can move money to a bank account within minutes. Etsy shows any fee before you confirm.

  • Regulatory operating fees: A country-specific percentage that applies to sellers in certain countries.

  • Pattern website: Free for 30 days, then $15 per month.

What Etsy Really Takes: Four Payout Examples

Numbers on a fee chart feel abstract until a sale lands in your account.

These examples assume a US seller, a buyer paying through Etsy Payments, no sales tax, and the $0.20 listing fee counted once.

You keep it before shipping labels, materials, and taxes.

Two patterns stand out. Cheap items feel the flat $0.45 (listing plus processing) more sharply, which is why the $10 item loses 14% while the $100 item loses about 10%.

And an ad-driven sale can take a quarter of the order, so it deserves its own margin check.

A Simple Pricing Shortcut

For a US seller without ads, the fees on a free-shipping order come to about 9.5% of the order plus $0.45.

To break even, divide your total cost plus $0.45 by 0.905. If a product costs you $20 to make and pack, the break-even price is roughly $22.60.

Add your profit on top of that, then adjust if ads are part of your plan.

How to Lower Your Etsy Fees

You cannot negotiate the standard rates, but you can trim what you pay in a few ways.

Use Share & Save

Etsy's Share & Save program refunds 4% of the qualifying transaction total when a buyer orders through your trackable link.

That effectively drops the 6.5% transaction fee to 2.5% on those sales.

The program terms I found are dated February 2024, so check Shop Manager to confirm you are eligible today.

Watch for Offers Before You Pay

Startup costs and supply purchases add up quickly. Before you pay for anything, see whether an Etsy coupon code applies, and read the terms so you know what it covers and when it expires.

Other Habits That Help

  • Turn off auto-renew on listings that are not selling.

  • Price shipping honestly. Because Etsy takes fees on shipping, charging a fair amount avoids losing money on both ends.

  • List in your payment account currency to skip the 2.5% conversion fee.

  • Skip Offsite Ads while you are under $10,000, if the 15% fee does not fit your margins.

  • Steer repeat customers to your Share & Save links instead of relying only on marketplace search.

Is Selling on Etsy Worth the Fees?

That depends on what you get for the money.

Etsy brings a built-in audience of shoppers who are already looking for handmade, vintage, and craft items, so you skip the hardest part of a new business: getting the first visitors.

The trade-off is that fees are layered, and a low-priced item can lose a big slice to flat charges.

If you are comparing a marketplace with running your own store, this Etsy vs Shopify comparison breaks down cost, traffic, and control side by side.

Whichever route you choose, run the numbers on your top three products first. If the margin still looks healthy after fees, shipping, and materials, you have your answer.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does Etsy take from a $100 sale?

For a US seller with no ads, Etsy takes about $9.95: $0.20 for the listing, $6.50 in transaction fees, and $3.25 in payment processing.

You would receive $90.05 before shipping and material costs.

Does Etsy charge a fee if my item does not sell?

Yes. The $0.20 listing fee applies whether or not the item sells, and listings renew every four months unless you turn off auto-renew.

Does Etsy charge fees on shipping?

Yes. The 6.5% transaction fee applies to the shipping you charge the buyer. The payment processing fee also applies to shipping, and to sales tax where relevant.

Are Etsy fees refundable?

Etsy states that service fees are non-refundable. The one notable exception is payment processing: if you refund a buyer, Etsy credits back the matching share of the processing fee.

How and when do I pay Etsy fees?

Etsy deducts fees from your payment account balance. If the balance is too low, you owe the difference within 15 days of your monthly statement, and Etsy can charge the card on file. US sellers can also enroll in AutoBilling.

Can I avoid Offsite Ads fees?

Yes, while your shop has made less than $10,000 in sales over the past 365 days, you can opt out. Once you pass that mark, participation is required and the fee is 12% on attributed orders.

Does Etsy charge a monthly fee?

Not for a standard shop. The only monthly charges are optional: Etsy Plus at $10 per month and a Pattern site at $15 per month after the free trial.

The Bottom Line on Etsy Selling Fees

Etsy's core costs are easy to remember: $0.20 to list, 6.5% on the sale, and a processing fee that is 3% plus $0.25 in the US.

For most sellers that adds up to roughly a tenth of the order, with ads and low prices pushing the share higher.

Price with those numbers in mind, check your Shop Manager for any account-specific changes, and you will know what each sale is worth before it happens.
